Day 55 July 16th Jehovah Jireh
Lusk WY to Douglas WY 56 miles (2,489)
About 20 miles after passing this establishment I heard from an old time resident that they have the best pie in the state. Here is a video of the sign - if you listen closely, you may note that the poor old horse needs some glucosamine:
About 30 miles into today's ride I came across this historical marker:
I took the time to pull across the highway and check it out because the name intrigued me. It comes from the Old testament story when God told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, Abraham's son of promise. On the way up the mountain to the altar, Isaac commented that he noticed they had the fire and the wood, but where was the sacrifice? Abraham replied, "Jehovah Jireh"; which means, "God will provide." Laura and I used to sing a chorus entitled, "Jehovah Jireh, My Provider." I sang this course aloud as I proceeded on the shoulder of highway 20 toward Douglas, Wyoming.
Another coal train. These crazy long trains have at least a mile worth of coal cars. You can see several engines in the front pulling. There are also several engines part way back that do some heavy pushing and pulling. And then again at the end of the entire train there are two or three more engines pushing. Something I don't understand is that I saw two of these long trains heading east and one heading west. Seems like they could have accomplished the same thing with just one train heading east?
Cows often check me out as I ride by. I'm not sure whether it's because they're not used to cyclists or because they know I have one of their parts - in 2014 I had my aorta valve replaced with a bovine valve:
This is Sheri. She is racing the Bike Non Stop US - the same race Donald from a few days ago was riding. Sheri is the penultimate rider with the rider in first having already completed the race to D.C. We met on a hill just outside of Douglas- my overnight spot for tonight - and talked about heat, wind, camping and tires.
I soon arrived in Douglas, Wyoming's jackalope capital:
I met Earl and Leigh Ann from Florida. They sold their home in 2002 and have been traveling and living out of their truck and fifth wheel ever since. When I counted to three to take their picture they said, "Jackalopes are real!" :
I crossed this bicycle friendly bridge over the Platte River on my way to my overnight:
I guess they are real!

ReplyDeleteI am late catching up on the blog but wanted to share that when I saw this post I started singing "Jehovah Jireh...His grace is sufficient for me!" If you aren't home yet I think you will be very soon! Blessings.
