Day 53 July 14th Heart Thumpin'
Chadron NE to Harrison NE 52 miles (2,401)
There were two highlights to today's ride:
1) Fort Robinson.
2) Riding alone in a canyon with a herd of buffalo nearby.
After visiting Fort Robinson (more on that later), I decided to take a road called Smiley Canyon. With a name like that, how could I resist? After ignoring this sign,
I soon found myself alone in a canyon with a herd of bison crossing the road too close for my comfort. I took these pictures with my heart thumping violently in my throat:
Some sights prior to arriving in Fort Robinson just outside of Crawford, Nebraska:
Fort Robinson is an impressive historic U.S. landmark located in northeastern Nebraska:
Wayne and Terry came over to talk to me at the restaurant in Fort Robinson and to ask my advice for traveling in the Sandhills area of Nebraska. Their brother-in-law is riding his bicycle across the US west to east. We were able to determine that he was about 200 miles southwest of where we were.
Fort Robinson also had a natural history museum containing an interesting fossilized event in which two mammoths fought to their death:
After climbing through Smiley Canyon, I made my way on highway 20 to my overnight in Harrison, Nebraska:

ReplyDeleteLove the video linked at the end! There's a bar in Sacramento that makes a cocktail called "Guy on a Buffalo" - they must have gotten that from this video! Episode 2 was my favorite!
ReplyDeleteAlso why didn't you ride a bison? Would have been an amazing story! IF you lived to tell it.
ReplyDeleteHope you don’t get any ideas from the video. From now on, let’s obey warnings in regards to wildlife and bicycle 🙂
ReplyDeleteWhat an adventure, I would have been scared of death.
