Sounds like the weather has not been as hospitable as the people on your ride through Iowa. :/ Hopefully you get a couple agreeable days of riding in before you hit NE! Was great meeting you and hearing about your trip, your wife and kids. Thoroughly enjoyed reading the beginning of your blog up through the present to match some of the pictures to your stories! Will continue to track your journey - safe travels!
Very special to meet and to be open to interact with so many strangers on your journey, respecting everyone’s wishes to publicity or privacy. Pedal on…
Hancock, MD to Cumberland, MD - 60 miles (305) Today I rode alone. Laura was shuttled to Cumberland and her ride happened to be the owner of the the Desert Rose where we had lunch yesterday. Laura took my bags with her so my bike felt extra light - rain was in the forecast late morning so I awakened shortly after 4 am and was on the trail by 5 am. Even though it was still dark I felt safe with my new headlight and the first 14 miles were paved. Today's highlight was the Paw Paw tunnel. Bridge into Cumberland. The end of the C&O. Tomorrow we begin the Great Allegany Passage and a climb to the top of the Eastern Continental Divide. Shortly after my arrival in Cumberland it began pouring. Laura and I put on our fanciest duds and walked to dinner.
Gardiner MT to Pine Creek MT. 46 miles (2,887) Today's ride ended with 17 miles of pure riding pleasure through Montana's Paradise Valley: video000000016.mp Here are some sites before I got to Paradise Valley: I met Marshall while he was going toward Yellowstone: Marshall is riding from Alaska to Argentina! So far he has ridden 1,200 miles from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska to Anchorage, Alaska, where he caught a plane to Bozeman, Montana. He had to skip Canada for now because of Covid restrictions; but will ride Canada when he gets back from Argentina in one and a half to two years. He is planning on hiking/climbing the highest mountain in each country he passes through. On my way back from dinner I met a young couple who are staying in a cabin next to mine: Neil and Kori giving the OH sign for Ohio. Neil is a fireman in Cleveland and Kori is a kindergarten teacher in ...
Xenia OH to Brookville OH via Tipp City 55 miles (874) Today this gentleman saved my bacon. More on that later. Around 6:30 this morning, I sent a clarifying email to a Warm Showers member in Dayton, OH asking for advice on the best bridge to use to cross over the Great Miami River. My RidewGPS app said to use the 5th street bridge, but googlemaps bicycle mode said to use the Monument Ave bridge. When I was ready to begin my ride at 8 am, I had not receives a reply, so I did what I usually do and put my phone in airplane mode. As I was approaching Dayton I thought to myself I would simply ask another local rider if or when I came upon one. After about 15 miles I was stopped at a park and saw a cyclist come from the other direction who stopped and was looking at a map. I went up to him and asked him if he was familiar with the Dayton area. He tilted his head and looked at me quizzically and asked, "What's your name?" A bit taken aback, but wanting to give th...
