Day 23 June 14th Frances Kiser

Peru IN to Royal Center IN 32 miles (1,064)

Today, I got to play chess at a cafe, which normally would qualify as today's highlight. But today is an exception because of Frances. Frances is a Warm Showers host who, though she lives on a remote Indiana farm road, she still sees lots of cyclist because it's part of the Adventure Cycling Central Tier Route. Over the years she has hosted scores of cyclists and has compiled quite a visitors book of everyones comments and pictures.

My warm shower host, Frances.

I took this picture at the end of a humongous farm dinner served to me and three other cyclist going east to west from Boston, MA to Astoria, OR. I should have taken the picture before we started eating - the amount of food was eye popping. Pictured here are Rory, Dylan and Hiroto - all graduates from Tufts University, Frances and her son Kevin.

Today included some more beautiful Indiana farm roads and river crossings.

This was the best peppermint iced tea - so I got one for the road.

While enjoying my lunch I noticed two young men playing chess and asked if I could play the winner. They were excited about the prospect and I ended up playing the younger brother, Julian.
Julian and I had a very intense (= enjoyable) match.

Today's only trail was the Panhandle Pathway - a very scenic trail in central Indiana.

Hoping against 20 mph winds that the house in the distance is my destination.

A few yards later and I see this sign - confirming that my hopes are realized!

My campsite for the night. Some Warm Showers hosts offer their yard for camping, so we pitched our tents on this lawn.

We stored our bikes in this workshop for the night.

This is Rory's bike set up for his cross country trip.

Frances' collection of comment cards and pictures of the many cyclists who she has hosted over the years.
